Omnistroke Sans

One of the hard and fast rules for me in school (set by my fascist typography teacher) was that type must not be stretched. This is because it distorts the geometry of the font; the strokes and angles are especially mangled by any excessive distortion.

I have created a single-line typeface that can be stretched and distorted at your leisure without drastic effects to the readability. Its called 'Omnistroke Sans'. An added benefit is that you can change the stroke weight and style as you see fit, to make a nearly unlimited number of variations in style. About this site:

Type.fwis.com is for me to test myself and see if I can design a new typeface every day for 31 days. You will be able to critique me and download an EPS of the file. This will likely end in tears and embarrassment for myself.

I will not convert any of these to real fonts as I have neither the time nor the knowledge.

For the true-blue typography geeks who are ATypI members and are deeply offended by my blunders, I am quite sorry and you should feel free to hurl insults and old issues of Emigre.

Please let me know if you want to use any of these in a project, I would be honored. It is very likely I will give permission in exchange for a copy of the final piece. See the About section for more details, or contact me.

I am intrigued by the concept but I'm not sure how it works. The sample you show doesn't display any stretching does it? The stroke contrast would be quite obvious.

Nevertheless, I really like the forms in general, especially the wide and light.

Ah, you mean add weight, not width. Bingo! It works. Maybe not so much in the top sample where the 'A' counter clogs.

noteworthy

Yes, I wonder if I could somehow manage that with the stroke alignment tool in illustrator... I'll have to experiment with that tool if/when I do another in the omnistroke series.
