Camotype

I think this one is pretty straightforward - once I get my hand on some good camo pattern books I'll probably do another three or four of these since they're easy and totally gangsta.

Cactus

This is actually a failed experiment - I'm trying to create fractal typefaces that recurse several orders of magnitude - here we have something that didn't work, but I thought looked cool. Watch for more of these - maybe it'd make a cool poster for some punk architectural fusion concert?

About this site:

Type.fwis.com is for me to test myself and see if I can design a new typeface every day for 31 days. You will be able to critique me and download an EPS of the file. This will likely end in tears and embarrassment for myself.

I will not convert any of these to real fonts as I have neither the time nor the knowledge.

For the true-blue typography geeks who are ATypI members and are deeply offended by my blunders, I am quite sorry and you should feel free to hurl insults and old issues of Emigre.

Please let me know if you want to use any of these in a project, I would be honored. It is very likely I will give permission in exchange for a copy of the final piece. See the About section for more details, or contact me.

Koolhand

This is something I started a while back and never really finished; a weird display typeface based on the architecture of one of my favorites, Rem Koolhaas. I honestly have no real justification for loving OMA, I think its just highly avant garde and postmodern - very little architecture in the US catches my attention, I am sad to say. I believe this has to do with the conservative attitudes on aesthetics that are prevalent in all walks of life here in the states.

That said, this typeface is probably pretty ugly used as anything other than a textural treatment. I promise I will try harder this weekend when I have more time.

TrussType

This is based on the truss system in old dutch colonial houses that I've seen around the states - I've put variations on some of the letters I wasn't sure I liked.

Nuit

Sometimes you have to indulge yourself - with all these modular, uniform styles I had to let my beard grow long. There's multiple instances of most characters, as I absolutely despise 'handmade' type in which you have no variation amongst the same letters.

Paratype

This one is strange - you download text boxes, not fonts... I've filled them with Lorem Ipsum... the point is that you can fill them with your own type - perhaps for a layout or something? Some of these letter-forms don't work or would be completely unreadable as paragraphs - perhaps someday I'll revisit this one and dis-un-readable-ize them. Until that day, please don't hate me.

Download Paratype. Note: It is an AI and not an EPS because I'm not sure the threading &c. will function. Sorry about that - be sure to let me know if you have problems.

I'm sorry to say that today's might be a bit boring - another Omnistroke. This is because I am working on something a bit more complicated for tomorrow. I had to get it down on paper, as I find this to be useful in building other type ideas.

Eurochair

This one was inspired by an old ad I found for fancy chairs - a vine-like typeface which I've modified here to be squarish and more modern. This is also a single-stroke typeface so that you may thicken as-needed.

Omnistroke Sans

One of the hard and fast rules for me in school (set by my fascist typography teacher) was that type must not be stretched. This is because it distorts the geometry of the font; the strokes and angles are especially mangled by any excessive distortion.

I have created a single-line typeface that can be stretched and distorted at your leisure without drastic effects to the readability. Its called 'Omnistroke Sans'. An added benefit is that you can change the stroke weight and style as you see fit, to make a nearly unlimited number of variations in style. Look for more Omnistroke family members coming up here at type.fwis.com
